WORKERS AT SUPER RETAIL GROUP STRIKE AGAINST TWO-TIER PAY SYSTEM, CALL ON CEO ANTHONY HERAGHTY TO RESPECT THEM

Today over 100 Victorian warehouse workers, who move stock for well-known brands such as Rebel Sport, Supercheap Auto and Macpac, are on strike to win job security and a fair pay deal at Super Retail Group (SRG).

Since April, SRG has failed to make a fair pay offer, despite an expansion in its operations and a highly profitable year, with record sales of $3.9 billion and a net profit of $242 million.

Rather than recognising workers’ contributions, SRG has told union members to settle for a subpar offer, including reduced rates for casuals and new starters.

This proposed two-tier pay system would undermine current conditions, and in the context of SRG’s plan to relocate its Victorian warehouse, potentially strip working people of jobs they can count on.

To prevent this, United Workers Union (UWU) members have been forced to take strike action, fighting for outsourcing and relocation protections, as well as a fair disciplinary procedure.

Union members are calling on SRG’s CEO, Anthony Heraghty, to respect them and deliver a fair deal for all workers at Super Retail Group.

Actions will also be held by SRG workers in New South Wales and Queensland, who will visit stores and ask shoppers to support their campaign.

Comment attributable to Tim Kennedy, UWU National Secretary:

“This is a company that can’t afford more bad press. It can afford, however, to pay workers fairly.

“Workers at SRG are asking for a cost-of-living pay increase and respect: a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work, and for everyone who is working the same job, to receive the same
pay.

“This is an opportunity for the CEO to do the right thing by those who helped make SRG’s billions possible.”

One worker from SRG who wants to remain anonymous said:

“We are simply asking for a fair pay rise. Not a lump sum. The company asks us to work areasonable amount of overtime. Well, all we’re asking for is a reasonable pay rise.”
