{"id":64023,"date":"2025-07-09T06:00:17","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T20:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/development.uwu.org.au\/staging2\/?p=64023"},"modified":"2025-07-28T11:07:05","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T01:07:05","slug":"star-casino-workers-walk-out-on-state-of-origin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/development.uwu.org.au\/staging2\/media-release\/star-casino-workers-walk-out-on-state-of-origin\/","title":{"rendered":"HIGH STAKES STRIKE: STAR CASINO WORKERS WALK OUT ON STATE OF ORIGIN NIGHT"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"64023\" class=\"elementor elementor-64023\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-64afb0f5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"64afb0f5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-799cb15d sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"799cb15d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Star Brisbane Casino workers will escalate their protected industrial action tonight (EDS: Wednesday, 9 July), staging a four-hour strike during one of the busiest nights of the year &#8211; the State of Origin decider.<\/span><\/p><p>The high-stakes walkout follows Friday\u2019s first-ever strike by Star Brisbane Casino workers and comes after Star management failed to return to the table with an improved offer.<\/p><p>Workers, represented by the United Workers Union, say they are left with no choice but to turn up the pressure after being offered a real-wage cut and seeing no progress on key issues, including a cut to Sunday penalty rates.<\/p><p>United Workers Union National Casinos Director Andrew Jones said the timing of the stoppage is no accident.<\/p><p>\u201cIf Star thinks it can sideline workers while the crowd\u2019s packing in for one of the biggest nights in the footy calendar, they\u2019ve got another thing coming,\u201d Mr Jones said.<\/p><p>\u201cOur members are taking the fight straight up the middle. State of Origin is a marquee event for the casino \u2013 and Star will feel the pressure from before kick-off.\u201d<\/p><p>Hundreds of frontline staff from across the casino will stop work, many of whom have worked through the toughest periods in the company\u2019s recent history, including regulatory crisis and public scrutiny.<\/p><p>The 2025 Brisbane Champs, a planned poker event for this week, has also been cancelled, highlighting the growing impact of the ongoing industrial action.<\/p><p>\u201cThese are the workers who kept Star Brisbane afloat through thick and thin. The ball is in Star\u2019s court. Either come back with a fair offer or face further disruption. Our members are united, determined, and ready to stand up for what they\u2019ve earned,&#8221; Mr Jones said.<\/p><p>Andrew Jones is available for interviews.<\/p><p><em>Note: Industrial action will take place from 6 pm to 10 pm on Wednesday, 9 July.
