Flexibility at work is especially important for workers who need to manage care responsibilities or a health condition. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/labour\/earnings-and-working-conditions\/working-arrangements\/latest-release#working-time-arrangements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">A third of workers in Australia<\/a> now have Flexible Work Agreements (FWA) which has contributed to a higher rate of participation and opportunities for women in the workforce. <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/all-women-not-just-mothers-could-benefit-from-more-workplace-flexibility-26088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">But flexibility isn\u2019t just for mothers<\/a>. Unions fought for workers to have the right to request flexible work, whether that\u2019s for religious observance, caring responsibilities, disability, pregnancy, experiencing family and domestic violence, or being over 55. If work or home have become hard to manage, flexibility could be just what you need.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-61068de e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"61068de\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74b1730 sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"74b1730\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Flexibility is less stigmatised than it used to be<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b668809 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"b668809\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8f03cd0 sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8f03cd0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Asking for variation of hours from your employer used to be stigmatised, and many workers were made to feel guilty about it. But a surge in working from home during COVID has helped normalise flexibility in your place of work and hours of work.<\/p><p>&#8216;Flexible work&#8217; was imagined and campaigned for by women workers over decades, then finally won and added to the National Employment Standards (NES) in 2009. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgea.gov.au\/flexible-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">It\u2019s known to improve work performance and overall well-being<\/a>. But as more men contribute to care responsibilities outside work, flexible work can become normalised and less gender-based which will both further increase women\u2019s participation in the workforce and also reduce the amount of unpaid labour done by women outside work.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4415024 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"4415024\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-03afc1a sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"03afc1a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Leave is important, but doesn\u2019t replace flexibility<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf91e92 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"cf91e92\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71066c9 sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"71066c9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are many <a href=\"https:\/\/development.uwu.org.au\/staging\/articles\/leave-entitlements\/\">types of leave that workers are entitled to<\/a> and need to take from time to time. Annual Leave is also important for work-life balance, so it should be used preferably for rest and recreation. Parental Leave, Carer\u2019s Leave and Personal Leave are essential, especially for workers who have a young family or elderly relatives with high care needs. These types of leave are used heavily by women workers and are only starting to be used more by men in families where care responsibilities are shared more equally.<\/p><p>But as we know, leave runs out, or it\u2019s not always easy to take for an hour here or there. That\u2019s where FWAs come in.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bd972cc e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"bd972cc\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cade139 sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cade139\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Who is entitled to flexible work?\n<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-30f334e e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"30f334e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-50f4dad sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"50f4dad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If you have caring responsibilities of children or elderly relatives, you can request flexible work. Here are some possibilities:<\/p><p><strong>Flexible hours\u00a0<br \/><\/strong>Vary your start and finish times, eg. to fit with school pick-up times or medical appointments.<\/p><p><strong>Compressed working week<br \/><\/strong>Work the same number of working hours in a week over fewer days, eg. working 10-hour days\u00a0for 4 days per week, instead of 8 hours for 5 days per week.<\/p><p><strong>Time-in-lieu or flexi-time<\/strong><br \/>Work extra hours and then claim those hours as time off on another day.<\/p><p><strong>WFH or telecommuting<\/strong><br \/>Work at a more convenient location for you than your official place of work.<\/p><p><strong>Part-time work<\/strong><br \/>Agree to work less than full-time hours, so you have regular (unpaid non-working) days off during the week for a fixed period of time. This is called a Flexible Work Agreement (FWA).
