{"id":7546,"date":"2020-03-09T12:15:20","date_gmt":"2020-03-09T01:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/development.uwu.org.au\/staging\/?p=7546"},"modified":"2025-07-28T13:59:21","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T03:59:21","slug":"wa-hospital-workers-win-fight-against-privatisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/development.uwu.org.au\/staging\/archive\/wa-hospital-workers-win-fight-against-privatisation\/","title":{"rendered":"WA hospital workers win fight against privatisation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of health workers in Western Australia have won a decade-long fight against healthcare privatisation today, with the McGowan Government announcing key Fiona Stanley Hospital services would be brought back into public hands.<\/p>\n<p>United Workers Union \u2013 the union for hospital support staff including cleaners, catering staff and orderlies \u2013 welcomed the winding back of Serco\u2019s $4.3 billion hospital contract, which would deliver better jobs for more than 600 workers and better care for the community.<\/p>\n<p>Health worker and union member Phyllis de Gois was among thousands who stood together and spoke out against the privatisation of health services in WA.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7547\" src=\"https:\/\/development.uwu.org.au\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/200305_serco-announcement_FB-graphic-v2-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am thrilled about what our campaign has achieved \u2013 it\u2019s better for the patients, better for the public, and better all round,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hospitals we work in belong to the community. We never want to see a government try and outsource our public health again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>United Workers Union WA State Secretary Carolyn Smith said the move was a turning point for workers across the country facing threats of privatisation every single day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe courageous effort of our members to stand up and take a stand against the privatisation of health services has built the case for showing Serco the door,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe multiple failures of Serco show the risk of putting company profits ahead of the public good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis privatised system of cutting corners has left cleaners, caterers and orderlies demoralised and unable to provide the quality of care they know patients deserve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s decision is a victory for working people who stood up for the high standard of health care our community expects and deserves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur members are pleased the State Government has listened and will bring hospital services under public control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is recognition that privatisation in our hospitals doesn\u2019t work.
