{"id":40002,"date":"2022-05-19T12:16:34","date_gmt":"2022-05-19T02:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/development.uwu.org.au\/staging\/?p=40002"},"modified":"2025-10-08T11:47:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T00:47:20","slug":"govt-action-in-wa-ambos-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/development.uwu.org.au\/staging\/archive\/govt-action-in-wa-ambos-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"GOVT ACTION IN WA AMBOS NEEDED"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United Workers Union (UWU) has welcomed the State Government\u2019s intervention to help prevent the total breakdown of the St John Ambulance service.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au\/Pages\/McGowan\/2022\/05\/Multi-agency-response-to-support-WAs-ambulance-service.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Ministerial statement<\/a>, the government has been forced to take the reigns following multiple failures in service provision which potentially contributed to the death of a Perth woman over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The union has been warning St John was ill-prepared to deal with the Omicron outbreak <a href=\"https:\/\/development.uwu.org.au\/staging\/media-release\/st-john-fails-omicron-test\/\">since January<\/a>, but these warnings were not heeded by St John. Prior to the borders opening, the union met with St John on multiple occasions offering a host of solutions to the pending crisis.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that the operator has also failed to draw upon resources from other emergency departments such as Department of Fire and Emergency Services that have been available.<\/p>\n<p>UWU National Ambulance Coordinator Fiona Scalon said she was relieved the McGowan Government was stepping in for the sake of ambulance workers and for everyone who relied on a functioning emergency service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSt John is claiming they couldn\u2019t foresee this inevitable crisis. This is just a convenient excuse. There were plenty of levers they could have pulled before it got to this point,\u201d Ms Scalon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell things are now at breaking point and I can only hope the Government\u2019s strategy can help alleviate the huge amount of stress that St John staff, including paramedics, are under,\u201d Ms Scalon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is only a stop-gap solution. A complete overhaul of the service is desperately needed.
