{"id":29270,"date":"2021-06-22T14:02:05","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T04:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/development.uwu.org.au\/staging\/?p=21939"},"modified":"2025-07-28T16:01:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T06:01:23","slug":"no-job-security-for-school-cleaners-in-nsw-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/development.uwu.org.au\/staging\/archive\/no-job-security-for-school-cleaners-in-nsw-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"No job security for school cleaners in NSW budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The hopes of school cleaners across New South Wales were dashed as planned cuts to cleaning hours across 480 schools went unaddressed in today\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quotes attributable to Lyndal Ryan, United Workers Union Director of Property Services:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government\u2019s announcement lacked any mention of investment in school cleaning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderinvestment results in a lack of training, poor equipment, undersupply of basic supplies and PPE and unrealistic workloads across our schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeading up to today\u2019s budget, the United Workers Union called on the NSW Government to reverse their decision to cut cleaning hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the middle of a pandemic, and with a new cluster growing, the NSW Government is continuing down the path to slash the time our dedicated school cleaners have to keep schools and communities safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCleaners, teachers, parents and school communities remain in the dark about which schools will make up the 480 and when the cuts will come into play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool cleaners were refused the decency of detail and certainty today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A letter sent to schools from the Department of Education stated the government\u2019s 2019 contract lets contractors calculate the amount of cleaning they believe each school needs. As a result, \u201cunder the contract, cleaning hours were to be reduced in 480 schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The change was delayed in term one last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
